February 6, 2022 “Not a Matter of Who but Why” Our guest speaker Kyree Harrison is going to speak on cultural appropriation. Over the last decade a discussion within the academic and religious worlds of church choirs and congregational singing has been growing regarding whether it is appropriate for white congregations to sing songs that were written in Black communities or in the context of the Black American experience. There is a discomfort and even fear coming from not wanting to offend, feeling that “maybe I don’t have a right, as an outsider, to participate in a musical tradition that is not my own.”  How can we UUs sing the spirituals found in our hymnal and other sources without fear that we are being culturally inappropriate?  Kyree will help us think through this problem.
