A Unitarian minister in 1886 gave us the optimistic promise of “The Progress of Mankind, onward and upward forever.” Riding the cresting wave of modernity, people could believe in the perfectibility of humans through reason, technological and scientific advances, and the obvious truth that everything was getting better. We were born upon that wave, but have seen it crash repeatedly. Now we are living amidst rising fascism and climate change, and it’s getting harder to believe those old myths. If progress is dead, where does that leave us?
