Job Description: Director of Lifespan Religious Education
Title: Director of Lifespan Religious Education
Employment Status: Exempt, Full Time
Reporting: The DLRE reports to the Lead Minister.
Primary Areas of Responsibility:
The DLRE works with the ministerial and administrative staff, grounded in our shared values, to carry forth the mission as laid out in its ends statements. They work in collaboration with the Youth Religious Education Committee, Adult Religious Education Committee, and the Congregational Administrator.
They supervise the childcare staff and religious education staff, including volunteers.
Evaluation:
Annual performance reviews will be conducted by the Lead Minister and communicated to the Board of Trustees. The review will consider input from the Youth Religious Education Committee, and the Adult Religious Education Chair(s).
I. Essential Functions
- Religious Education Coordinates the development and implementation of Lifespan Religious Education programs for the church. Lifespan RE includes all ages from infant through adult.
- Works in collaboration with the minister, Youth Religious Education Committee, and Adult Religious Education Committee to review, select, and obtain or create curricula for lifespan programs;
- Facilitates ministerial engagement with youth and adult religious education programming;
- Coordinates Lifespan teacher recruitment, scheduling and training, including annual teacher orientation sessions;
- Obtains supplies and prepares lesson plans for weekly Youth Religious Education classes; facilitates and acts as a resource for leaders of Adult Religious Education programming;
- Organizes and maintains physical classroom space, storage spaces, and materials;
- Facilitates regular Our Whole Lives programming at all age levels including;
- Recruiting and training teachers
- Scheduling and organizing classes
- Preparing and maintaining supplies and updated materials
- Worship: In collaboration with the minister and Worship Committee;
- Plans and coordinates Multigenerational Worship Services (up to 10 times yearly) examples include holiday pageants, Youth RE Sunday, scholarship awards, and child dedications
- Coordinates Story Wisdom segment of Sunday Services (either leads the presentation, recruits other presenters, or assists the Minister, as needed, in identifying age-appropriate materials for their presentations)
- Creates and maintains children’s worship supplies for use during services
- Small Group Ministry Supports small group ministry with the collaboration of the ministers, including:
- Training & supporting facilitators
- Providing materials
- Planning informational sessions for new members in small groups and classes
- Administration
- In collaboration with the ministers and the church administrator, manages the RE program, including:
- Attendance at staff meetings, monthly meetings of the church Coordinating Team, Youth Religious Education Committee, Adult Religious Education Committee, Worship Committee, Congregational Meetings, and other annual events such as Leadership Bridging
- Prepares and manages the Lifespan Religious Education budget in consultation with the Minister, Congregational Administrator and Board Treasurer and in collaboration with Youth Religious Education Committee and Adult Religious Education Committee
- Submits an annual report for the Congregational Meeting
- Recruits, trains, supervises, and provides evaluation to the RE Staff, volunteers, Child Care Provider(s), and Youth Advisor(s)
- Keeps Safety Protocols updated and effective and trains volunteers and staff in maintaining safety measures
- Maintains registration, permission, and medical information forms for all participants in Youth Religious Education and Youth activities
- Obtains, reviews and approves background checks on all Youth Religious Education teachers, Youth Advisors, Child Care Providers and volunteers
- Administers the Liz Garrison Foundation Bridging Award and Wade Richmond Scholarship
- Confers with Staff and/or Administrators of the San Antonio Area Foundation (for the Wade Richmond Scholarship) and with the Trustees of the Liz Garrison Foundation
- Organizes selection committees
- Publicizes scholarship application materials
- Coordinates receipt of applications and distribution of awards
- Communication Communicates updates of Religious Education programming to parents and Congregation as needed
- Produces and maintains marketing materials for RE
- Provides support, materials and information for parents for faith development at home
- In collaboration with Congregational Administrator, welcomes visitors with children
- Pastoral Care Provides pastoral care for families, youth and children in consultation with the ministers
Additional Duties
- May facilitate special events throughout the Previous examples include: Easter Egg Hunt, Holiday Giving Tree, Summer Camp, Halloween Party, UBARU Summer Camp Scholarships, Parents’ Night Out, Youth Rallies, Coming of Age trips.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
8. Wider UU Faith
- Maintains membership in LREDA
- Takes part in local LREDA activities as time allows
- Makes use of resources from LREDA and the UUA

III. Specific Job Prerequisites:
- Credentialed by LREDA or willing to complete credentialing as a UU Religious
- Respect for UU Shared Values
- Ability to demonstrate understanding and experience with UU congregational life
- Must pass a background check
IV. Compensation and other information:
Salary: The salary will be consistent with UUA Salary Process Guidance within the GEO 2, Size C Director Program/Administrative Tier between 90% – 100% ($58,700-$71,600) depending on experience. The salary will be distributed equally among 26 bi-weekly pay periods. Taxes will be taken out according to IRS requirements.
Retirement: contributions to the UUA Retirement plan will be matched up to 10% of salary.
Disability and Life Insurance: will be covered at 100% of an amount consistent with the UUA plans for Disability Insurance and Life Insurance.
Health Insurance: Employer will pay 80% of the premium for comprehensive employer-provided health insurance with benefits comparable to the UUA PPO/Standard PPO Plan for the DLRE, and 50% of the additional cost of covering any dependents (spouse/partner and/or dependent children up to age 26).
Professional Development: 10% of salary
Moving Expenses: actual expenses up to $9,000
