Our Whole Lives (OWL) Comprehensive Sexuality Education courses

Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. On a rotating basis, we offer courses for Kindergarten/first grade and for grades 5&6, 8&9, and 11&12.

Our upcoming schedule:

fall 2019-spring 2020: 8th & 9th grade (full-year course)
fall 2019: K-1
spring 2020: 5th & 6th grade

Leaders of the courses are trained and follow a faith-wide curriculum. A parent orientation is required, and students may enter only at the beginning of the course; after that, it is closed. More information on the curriculum is available at the Unitarian Universalist Association’s website.

Our First UU Coming of Age (COA) curriculum is really made up of three different learning experiences. The first is a yearlong classroom curriculum of reading, study, speakers, mentoring and writing exercises for 9th graders, leading them on a self-exploration of their UU beliefs.  At the end of the church year youth in the COA class present their written credos to the congregation. On either side of the classroom year is a travel learning experience. One year is a UU History travel experience to Boston and the UUA where students are able to walk in the footsteps of the early men and women who were important to each religion and to observe the current workings of the UUA. The other is a Service Learning trip, the location of which varies. The last service learning trip was to Heifer International’s Global Village in Arkansas.
