What is Black History Month?

History is a guiding light, or conversely to paraphrase George Santayana ‘Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.’ When Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week in 1926, his goals were to integrate Black history into the mainstream and highlight Black people’s contributions to society. For centuries, American history excluded uplifting stories about African-Americans, resorting to racial stereotypes and misrepresentations of Black life. What can Black History Month 2020 call us to remember, to challenge, to celebrate and to commit to as UUs in order to influence our society for the future?
